MISSION STATEMENT

As an integral component of United Hospital Center, the purpose of the Auxiliary shall be to interpret the goals of the Hospital to the general public; to assist the Hospital in any way possible as determined by Administration; and to engage in such fundraising activities as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Boards of both the Auxiliary and United Hospital Center.


THE AUXILIARY

HISTORY

Before the merger of St. Mary’s Hospital and Union Protestant Hospital, each Auxiliary operated independently since 1957.  In 1971, the two hospitals merged as the United Hospital Center creating a Downtown Division and South Division, with the Auxiliaries still operating independently.  In 1977 the two Auxiliaries merged as the Auxiliary to United Hospital Center.

The first president after the merger of the two Auxiliaries was Mrs. Pat Davis (deceased); followed by Mrs. Lucille Ellis (deceased), Mrs. Jane Tetrick, Mrs. Ina Elyard, Mrs. Mildred Crutchley (deceased), Mrs. Janice Cleland (deceased), Mrs. Mary Frances Atkins, Mrs. Jean Allen, Mr. Sam Ellis (deceased), Mrs. Pat Sokol, Mrs. Ruth Skinner (deceased), Mrs. Barbara Lopez, Mrs. Ruthan Clark, Mrs. Lyda Lister, Mrs. Neta Matthey (deceased), Mrs. Carol Gaynor, Mrs. Marjorie Greer and currently Mrs. Barbara Lopez.

The Auxiliary has had both volunteer and paid Directors over the years, but currently has a paid Auxiliary Coordinator.


OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide the extra services to patients while in the hospital making their stay more bearable, and to help make the visits of families and friends of our patients as pleasant as possible.
  • To provide assistance to paid staff.
  • To demonstrate to the public, patients and paid staff its support of the United Hospital Center per our mission and purpose.
  • To provide financial support for the hospital through Auxiliary-sponsored projects.

STRUCTURE:

Management: The Board of Directors meets April through March on the fourth Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. excluding January, April, July, August and December.

AFFILIATION:

AUXILIARY TO THE WEST VIRGINIA HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION (AWVHA)

The United Hospital Center Auxiliary is a member of the AWVHA.  The Annual AWVHA Convention and Educational Conference is held at the Greenbrier Hotel at White Sulphur Springs in the fall in conjunction with the West Virginia Hospital Association Annual Meeting.  The Auxiliary to United Hospital Center sends several delegates, and at present has members serving on the AWVHA Board.

AWVHA has 37 associated auxiliaries and communicates with them throughout the year through its four District Counselors, Workshops, Presidents’ Meetings, and a newsletter, which is published every three months.
